The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station hosted its 26th annual Haunted Jailhouse event to support the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley on Sunday.
The event brought thousands of residents from the Santa Clarita Valley to the sheriff’s station to partake in games, attractions, a costume contest and, its main attraction, a haunted house through the station’s jailhouse.
This year’s theme was “haunted asylum” as members of the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley got into costume and character to create the setting of an asylum, deputy Fanny Lapkin with the SCV Sheriff’s Station said.
“The jail haunted house is asylum themed this year so it gets a little scary,” Lapkin said. “There’s some screaming, it’s pretty intense.”
The walkthrough had two different sections, the asylum that catered to older children and adults and one for children.
“Its called the kid fun zone, it’s for toddlers,” Lapkin said. “It’s Peter Pan theme, so it very low key for the kids to go through and actually walk through the back of our jail.”
The haunted house was also host to many other attractions, such as a petting zoo and a search and rescue zip line for children.
“It’s fun to celebrate Halloween, we come here every year,” Thomas Brooks, a Santa Clarita resident, said. “I think the kids really enjoy it, which is important. It’s a good community spirit here.”
Throughout the entire day, the event’s main stage featured various performances and acts from many groups, including the Valencia High School Drumline.
With the performances, the main stage also featured an ongoing costume costume contest that hosted Jail house ninjadifferent age categories, starting with ages under 2 then moving up to the older ages, over the course of the day.
Santa Clarita Mayor Marsha McLean and Captain Roosevelt Johnson were the judges for this year’s event, Lapkin said.
Many of the attendees also participated in carnival games brought to the event by Six Flags Magic Mountain, who helps support the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley, Lapkin said.Jail House Judges
The sheriff’s and other emergency personnel set up booths around the edge of the haunted house, showcasing everything they offer to the community.
“It’s basically an outreach to the community,” Lapkin said. “We are here not only to arrest people but we’re here to help them out.”
All of the proceeds from the event were donated to the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley.
