The City of Santa Clarita is continuing its efforts to raise awareness about drugs and drug use and abuse in the community by offering another interactive drug awareness workshop on Wednesday, Oct. 26, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Teens and their parents are invited to the City’s “Drugs are Deadly” workshop, which will be held at the Jo Anne Darcy Canyon Country Library.
Attendees will be provided with information about methamphetamines, ecstasy, and prescription drugs as part of the City’s ongoing efforts to educate the community about drug abuse prevention. The efforts are part of the City’s ongoing “The High is a Lie” campaign, which kicked off in August with the successful Heroin Kills symposium.
“Heroin is an issue here in Santa Clarita, but we want our campaign to highlight more than one illegal substance” said Mayor Marsha McLean. “We want to continually educate parents and teens about drugs they may encounter, their affects, and ways to avoid drug use and misuse.”
Local treatment professionals, parents, and law enforcement officers will provide tips for participants on how to keep drugs from infiltrating family life. The workshop will include a discussion with Detective William Velek of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and addiction recovery personnel, who will share information on drug rehabilitation options and local services.
