The HuckleBerry Girls, a group of home-school students who attend the HuckleBerry Center for Creative Learning in Valencia, will host a two-day celebration of the Day of the Girl on Oct. 7 and Oct. 9.
Called “Powerful and Beautiful,” the event is designed to “shin(e) the light on the beauty and strength of girls.” It is open to parents, students and teachers in the HuckleBerry community as well as all other local homeschoolers.
The first day (Tuesday, Oct. 7) will feature a “round table discussion on the conventions of female beauty, unrealistic standards, and the attendant implications on both individuals and society. Discussion will include personal statements, commentary and videos.”
Newhall County Water District board member Maria Gutzeit, a business owner and cyclist, will participate in the discussion.
Day 2 (Thursday, Oct. 9) will feature “a series of mini-sports clinics led by local accomplished female athletes.”
The event will be held at the HuckleBerry Center, which rents space from Valencia Methodist Church at 25718 McBean Pkwy. For information contact Lori Rivas at lrivasx4@yahoo.com or (661)254-6528.
HuckleBerry is a 501c3 nonprofit that “partners with families to design an education that will find and develop every child’s personal gift and engage them in their learning so that they become joyful life learners.” In 2013 the HuckleBerry Girls successfully petitioned the City of Santa Clarita to issue a proclamation for the Day of the Girl.
