Oak Hills PTA and the Oak Hills Educational Foundation will co-host their annual week-long Oak Hills STEM Expo event at Oak Hills Elementary School from Tuesday through Friday, Jan. 29–Feb. 1.
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Young Oak Hills scientists and engineers designed projects to answer questions and solve problems while learning concepts in Engineering, Math, Chemistry, Physics or Life Sciences.
More than 150 students in grades K-6 performed background research, executed a project, then presented their work in the form of a poster.
The goal of Oak Hills’ STEM Expo is to encourage students to engage in scientific or engineering investigations and provide them with the opportunity to state their process, results and conclusions.
Posters are evaluated by volunteer judges from the community and students in 3rd-6th grades will also have one-on-one interviews with a judge.
The Oak Hills STEM Expo week will culminate with a family-friendly event in the school’s Multi-Purpose Room on Friday, Feb. 1, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Dessert will be available for purchase while friends, parents and teachers view the students’ posters.
The evening will conclude with a slideshow and an awards ceremony announcing the top-place projects from each grade level.
The top-place projects from 6th grade may be eligible to advance to the 2019 Los Angeles County Science and Engineering Fair held every year in Pasadena.
The advantages provided by a STEM-rich education are clear, and organizers believe engaging students in this type of critical thinking at the elementary level will lead to a bright future for Oak Hill’s young scientists.
