STOCKTON – The Lancaster JetHawks scored four runs in the first inning but couldn’t stave off the Stockton Ports in a 9-7 loss on Friday night at Banner Island Ballpark.
Lancaster (5-4, 38-41) tied a season-high for hits in an innings with five in the first and scored four runs to jump on Stockton starter Xaver Altamirano.
The first three batters of the game singled before Vince Fernandez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home the first run. Tyler Nevin and Steven Linkous added run-scoring hits in the inning.
The Ports (7-2, 51-28) put up two runs in the bottom of the first on Brandon Gold (5-5) to immediately cut into the lead. The JetHawks added run in the second on a Vince Fernandez RBI-single, but the Ports came right back with a two-run Jonah Heim home run in the third inning to make it a one-run game.
Max George hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, his first of two solo homers in the game, to help the JetHawks maintain their lead, but Stockton’s bats were relentless.
The Ports came up with four runs against Gold in the fourth inning. The right-hander finished the game by tying a career-high with eight earned runs allowed and setting a new career-high with 13 hits allowed.
George’s second home run came in the sixth inning but Lancaster was unable to score over the final three frames against Stockton’s bullpen. Angel Duno pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his eighth save.
Brian Serven went 0-for-4 to end his hitting streak at 14 games.
Here’s the box score.
The five-game series continued on Saturday night in Stockton.
