In a nod to the days when families would gather together in front of the fireplace with cups of hot cocoa to listen to their favorite radio station’s holiday entertainment, KHTS AM-1220 will be broadcasting a special holiday radio show called “The Santa Interviews.”

Families can tune in Saturday, Dec. 19 at 5:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 20 at 4:30 p.m. and on Christmas Eve, Thursday, Dec. 24 at 7 p.m. to hear the 30-minute show, which centers around Santa Claus as he looks for his next cookie supervisor.

“The story is all about a couple of elves, Macy and Gimble,” said T. Katz, host of the KHTS Afternoon Drive and director of the special project. “Santa needs a new cookie supervisor, and it’s all about how one of the elves thinks he’s got the job, and Santa says, ‘No, I need to hold interviews.’”

The show will feature appearances by Prancer the reindeer, Frosty the snowman, Gollum from “Lord of the Rings,” Ebenezer Scrooge from “A Christmas Carol” and more.

“Ultimately it’s all about how Santa goes through this process to make a choice,” Katz added. “It’s a fun opportunity to basically cuddle up with the family for a half hour and enjoy a radio program the way families used to do.”

To coordinate the production, Katz partnered with the executive director of the Santa Clarita Shakespeare Festival, David Ian Stears, who is also the founder and executive producer of LA SummerFEST and an adjunct associate professor in the theater department at College of the Canyons.

Together, Katz and Stears worked with local author Wade Bradford and KHTS AM-1220’s Andrew Menjivar to produce the project and bring together a cast of talented voices from the community to star in the show.

10269476_10207707762589129_5607852847697310621_nLeon Wordon, the 2015 SCV Man of the Year, will star as the production’s Santa alongside Katz, KHTS AM-1220’s George Cummings, COC’s “A Raisin in the Sun” actress Renee Poignard, Repertory East Playhouse Artistic Director Mikee Schwinn, Nancy Lantis and Gin Treadwell. Stears’ 11-year-old daughter, Madison Rose Stears, will act as the show’s narrator.

“The reason I wanted to do this is I felt like it was a bit of a love letter to the community that listens to us,” Katz said. “We have loyal listeners who follow us for traffic, for our weather, for our news and the love of the community. I felt like I wanted to give a gift to the listeners of something for the holiday.”

“The Santa Interviews” will air on KHTS AM-1220 Saturday, Dec. 19 at 5:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 20 at 4:30 p.m. and on Christmas Eve, Thursday, Dec. 24 at 7 p.m. Families can tune in to KHTS AM-1220 on the radio or listen to a live stream by clicking here.
