Marcia Hickman
Special Olympics Southern California is pleased to announce its 38-athlete delegation that has been named to Special Olympics Team USA, in preparation for the Special Olympics World Summer Games on July 25-Aug. 2, 2015, hosted in Los Angeles.
Congratulations to 45-year-old Marcia Hickman from Newhall, who will compete for the Southern California team in bowling. Active in Special Olympics for the past 15 years, Marcia won a Special Olympics gold medal last month in bowling competition. Her mom Avangelina said that Marcia is delighted to be participating in next year’s World Games and that she’s walking on air.
“Marcia loves to participate, likes the travel involved and loves the tournament atmosphere,” Avangelina said. “She loves being with her teammates and to win.”
Marcia is an avid Los Angeles Dodgers fan and loves watching the University of Southern California women’s basketball team. She also does needlepoint.
Marcia recently joined her teammates at the Special Olympics Team USA Training Camp in Indianapolis, where the athletes met their World Games coach and other athletes from all over the nation who will be joining them on their trip to the World Games. The camp offered a variety of coach/athlete meetings, sport-specific training and team building activities.
The 2015 World Games will be the largest event hosted by Los Angeles since the 1984 Olympic Games. More than 7,000 athletes, 3,000 coaches, 30,000 volunteers and 500,000 spectators will take over Los Angeles County with world-class venues including athlete villages at USC and UCLA, and a star-studded Opening Ceremony on July 25 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, site of the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games. Twenty five sporting events will take over 27 different venues.
