A check for $110,000 was presented to Special Olympics during Friday’s ceremony at the Westfield Valencia Town Center.
Alec Hagey, vice president and general manager of the Los Angeles Region of Toyota Motor Sales, handed over the donation.
“The mission of the Special Olympics is acceptance, inclusion and embracing diversity which align well with Toyota,” Hagey said.
Toyota is the official automotive partner of the Special Olympics and raised the money from its 76 dealers across Southern California. The original goal was $100,000.
“Those dealers pulled together, and I am very happy that we exceeded our objective,” Hagey said.
After the ceremony – which included drums, tambourines and cowbells that had been provided for the crowd – the team made another stop at Frontier Toyota where owner Joe Caso exchanged gifts with the team and presented a plaque to standout athlete Jonathan Sparks.
“The Special Olympics has given me confidence in myself and has shown me that I can do anything if someone gives me a chance to try,” Sparks said during the ceremony.
The torch relay includes stops in more than 120 cities and will be complete July 25 at the opening ceremony for the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games at L.A. Memorial Coliseum.
