The Master’s University men’s and women’s swimming teams dominated the GSAC Championships Jan. 30-31 in Aliso Viejo, winning both titles by more than 100 points.
The Master’s excelled in many areas, but flexed strength in the relays where the teams won every single event. This included the 200 freestyle relay, 200 IM relay, 400 freestyle and 400 IM in both men’s and women’s. These relay victories set the tone early and showcased TMU’s depth across sprint and stroke events.
“I couldn’t be more proud of how our swimmers showed up and competed. These athletes have worked extremely hard, and we saw that effort pay off this weekend,” TMU Head Coach Curren Bates said. “Most importantly, we give all the glory to God, for every opportunity, every strength and every victory. We race not just for the scoreboard, but for something far greater.”
The Mustangs also racked up victories in the individual races as well as many podium finishes. For the men, Izaiah Trevino-Lozano claimed three individual crowns, winning the 500 freestyle (4:32.77), 100 butterfly, and 200 butterfly, dominating both sprint and middle-distance fly events. Evan Nail took home multiple wins in the IM and breaststroke events, taking first in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 breaststroke.
Charley Sears added a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle while Dylan Crane won the 100 freestyle. Other Mustang winners included Michael Loughboro in the 100 backstroke and Ethan Soni in the 200 backstroke.
On the women’s side, sophomore Katherine Dyer led the way with wins in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 breaststroke. Clara Patterson also chipped in three victories in the 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 200 backstroke.
Key performances included Kylee Sears taking the 200 freestyle title, Megan Sutanto finishing first in the 100 freestyle and Bridget Mick winning the 100 breaststroke. victory.
The Mustangs also swept the awards for the meet with Patterson and Soni winning Freshman of the Year, Trevino-Lozano and Patterson taking home Newcomer of the Year and Dyer and Nail winning Swimmer of the Year. Coach Bates also took home Coach of the Year on both sides.
The teams will compete next at the Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference Championships on Feb. 11-14 in Monterey Park.
