The cadence was both familiar and unwelcome: strong showing in the opening set, steep crash in set two.
“The third game was critical,” said The Master’s University volleyball coach Allan Vince. “We had to show we still had confidence in our product.”
The Mustangs responded by winning the swing set, and then the one after that, taking down William Jessup 3-1 on Bross Court Saturday by scores of 25-18, 21-25, 25-18 and 25-22.
Vince said the key was adapting, a maneuver the Mustangs (11-16, 6-8 GSAC) have struggled to master all season. In short: What do you do when the other team stops doing what you expect them to do?
In this case, Jessup started swinging for the lines and tipping over blocks. In this case, the Mustangs shifted gears.
“Because we’ve had a whole year under our belt of learning the lesson that we have to adapt and we have to adapt quickly, I thought our girls responded well today,” Vince said.
“We started blocking line and picking up tips as an off blocker and getting the ball up high on a tough serve.”
On the attack, Regan Tate continued her second half break out, pushing into double digit kills for the fourth time in the last five matches.
She finished with a team-high 18 kills and hit .279.
Morgan Koch followed with 12 kills after being honored in a pre-game senior day ceremony.
She made her last regular season home game a good one.
The Mustangs built a 4-0 lead in set four. Then created space again after Jessup tied the score at 18.
Koch sealed the Mustangs’ third win in four matches with a final kill.
“I felt like with the fight we have shown all year, by reducing our errors and taking smarter swings, we were able to get the optimal points,” Vince said.
Here’s the box score.
