2003 - Ruth Newhall, longtime co-owner/editor of The Signal, dies in Berkeley [story]
Ruth Newhall

A new gas station and convenience store could soon be coming to a vacant lot at the southeast corner of Sierra Highway and Friendly Valley Parkway.

The plan calls for “construction of a four-island gas station and a 3,001 square-foot convenience store, with liquor sales for off-site consumption, called ‘Friendly Station Mart,'” according to a Santa Clarita Planning Commission report. The proposed gas station and convenience store would be located at 26400 Sierra Highway, a lot which has remained vacant since 1997.

The applicant, Fayad Takla, proposes a Rustic Californian architectural style for the project, which will include pump islands selling gas and diesel fuel housed under a 25-foot-tall canopy. The proposed convenience store, which will be located on the eastern portion of the project site, would be 3,001 square feet and be built at a height of 26 feet, 9 inches. The project would also include 17 parking spaces.

The proposed hours of operation for the gas station and convenience store, including alcohol sales, would be from 6:00 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week, according to the report.

The Santa Clarita Planning Commission is scheduled to take up the proposed project at its Tuesday night meeting.

The Commission is also scheduled to take action on a number of other items, including the proposed 184 multi-family homes within Area D of the approved River Village project, as well as a request from Old Town-Main, LLC to develop 47 residential condominium units and 13 commercial condominium units as part of the Newhall Crossings project, located on the southeast corner of Lyons Avenue and Main Street.

The Santa Clarita Planning Commission meeting will take place at City Hall, Tuesday, at 6:00 p.m.

Let’s see. There are 2 stores on the other 2 corners and a gas station too. This adds nothing new! Can’t they put something else there?

  2. You know I was JUST thinking the community would really benefit from a second gas station and a third liquor store at that intersection…

  3. Wasn’t there a gas station in that corner years ago?

  4. But there’s already a convenience store and gas station there ?

  5. But there’s already a convenience store and gas station there ?

  6. Amy Martin says:

I’m seeing a drive thru Starbucks going in there. I’d prefer a Coffee Bean cuz I HATE Starbucks, but… yea. Even though there’s one right down the road, i see them putting something like that there with ALL the building going on.

  7. In the 80s and before it was a gas station. Also canyon high schools bus stop

  8. Just what we need..another gas station and a ‘convenience ‘ store that will draw those who want to cause trouble…turning more and more into SF valley….?

  9. Moises Lopes says:

Wtf..just put a taco stand and end it!!

  10. John Bhatti says:

Used to be a gas station back in 1994 and 1995 I believe it was a Texaco gas station

  11. Santa Clarita, good bye

  12. As opposed to the gas station / convenience store already right across the street? They’re better if adding another drive thru Starbucks

  13. How about a 7/11 or crispy cream doughnuts ???

  14. Patricia Probasco says:

I wish we had a Burger King. I miss the one that we had on Soledad.

  15. They’re closing lots of 7-11 and Subways already.

  16. Steven Asker says:

Adrian Hannoun this is by your dads store no?

  17. There’s already a gas station and a convenience store there though! What??

  18. Jeanne says:

LOL, NOBODY wants a gas station there! The city needs to deny this. This does not bring the area anything that helps define it as a nice place to live. Listen to the people who live here. Start spending some time making this stretch of Sierra Hwy as important as Newhall is to those on the City Council. You worry a lot about what goes on there. How about some effort bringing up this area? NO GAS STATION

  19. Susie Bakman says:

Anybody remember when that gas station was run by the Tony and Susan Alamo group? They recruited folks that were on the “down” side of life and used them at many small businesses. Their foundation housed them up Sierra Highway. I didn’t buy gas there because the employees made me uncomfortable. Remember, these were the full service gas station days.

  20. Cathy says:

BTW,that part of town is Newhall. How about putting in a Coffee Bean?

  21. Sharon Todd says:

There was a 7-11 on that corner where the day care center is years ago. I think a restaurant would do well there since it would draw from Friendly Valley and Princess/Serena Park, Golden Valley etc. A convenience store could feasibly put that other liquor store out of business. Not cool. Or how about a Porto’s?

  22. Susie V Kaufman says:

A lovely little pocket park for younger children would be “FRIENDLY” and nice, and not create another traffic mess… not to mention add to the eyesore of that mini-intersection.

Indeed, as so many have already written, we have Arco directly across the street, on the NORTHwest corner, which is a GAS station. And on the SOUTHeast corner, there is already a liquor store, as well as some other small stores. North on Sierra Highway — only about three blocks further — are two more gas stations, along with Stater Bros., which also sells liquor. Costco (liquor) is then right around the corner from there.

City Council members don’t bloody care about this area, because none of them LIVES in this area, so why the hell NOT make this section even MORE unappealing for those of us having to live here… without the paseos and beautiful sidewalks and stunning trees and flowering shrubs, etc.?

Hey, we’ve got an upcoming election in November, and there are three open spaces available to replace three of those current uncaring city council members. I’m very, very anxious to move in Diane Trautman, Brett Haddock and Logan Smith, all of whom GENUINELY care about ALL parts of Santa Clarita.

  23. Jeanne says:

Don’t forget COSTCO sells gas too.

The site took years to be declared “clean” after the gas station that was there before. The area above it is known to many as “slippery slopes” because of the movement of the ground. I see no reason to allow another kind of environmental mess by allowing another toxic gas station so near an elementary school and the seniors across the street.
