Santa Clarita, Calif — Three home runs lifted the No. 9 College of the Canyons softball team to an 8-2 victory over Glendale Community College on ‘Sophomore Day’ at Whitten Field on Thursday afternoon.
Steward had a big day at the plate going 3-for-4, scoring three runs while driving in three runs. Her home runs were her eighth and ninth of the season.
Steward ranks second on the team in home runs behind Anderson who also whacked her 12th homer of the season.
Anderson went 2-for-2, scored a run, drew two walks and had two RBIs. She leads the team with 41 RBIs and a .546 batting average.
Head coach Jon Wissmath’s club also benefitted from solid performances by his dual-armed attack from the pitcher’s circle.
Milana Casillas and Ashley Russo combined for seven innings to keep Glendale at bay.
Casillas earned her seventh victory of the season (7-2) after pitching five innings. She scattered seven hits, a walk, and allowed two runs.
Russo was impressive in relief, shutting out the Vaqueros in two innings while striking out three and allowing only one hit.
The victory gives COC a 26-8-1 record overall and a 13-6 record against Western State Conference, Blue Division opponents. The No. 9 ranked Cougars sit behind Citrus College in the division standings.
Prior to the contest, which was COC’s last reular season home game, the Cougars honored the team’s five sophomores during a brief on-field ceremony.
The Cougars next travel to San Marcos for a doubleheader against Palomar College on Saturday, April 18.
