The final deadline to file for office in the Nov. 3 school and water board elections came and went Wednesday, and the results are in.
This is the first year that the William S. Hart Union High School District will be holding separate elections in geographical voting areas.
Both Gloria Mercado-Fortine and Steve Sturgeon signed up to run again – Mercado-Fortine in Trustee Area 1, Sturgeon in Trustee Area 4 – and both have challengers.
According to the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder and County Clerk’s office, Linda Storli a Realtor and retired Canyon High School teacher, will face Mercado-Fortine in the November election.
Sturgeon faces a challenge from 19-year-old Andrew Taban for his seat.
Robert P. Hall, Bob Jensen and Joe Messina aren’t up for election until 2017.
Neither incumbent in the financially troubled Castaic Union School District filed for re-election.
According to the Registrar-Recorder, newcomers Stacy Dobbs and Michael Owen Lambarth signed up to serve and will automatically take the seats in November.
The Newhall School District is also divided into voting-area districts.
Incumbents Michael Shapiro and Sue Solomon will be returning to the board, as they were the only people to file in Trustee Areas 4 and 5, respectively.
Two at-large seats are up in the Newhall County Water District, as well.
Incumbents Lynne Plambeck and Daniel Mortensen are seeking reelection; they’ll be facing a challenge from Jeff Ford and AV Equipment Rental owner Don Cruikshank.
In the Acton-Agua Dulce Unified School District, incumbents Michael Fox and Larry Layton will be keeping their seats.

Well, one has to wonder why Jeff Ford, a former employee of Castaic Lake Water Angency and now working for Kennedy Jenks, their big engineering firm, is running for the Newhall Water District. I guess if Castaic Lake can’t take over the whole valley with their illegal acquisitions of water companies, like their latest with Valencia (did everyone notice they just raised your rates 17% this year?), then they will try to do it through the electoral process. Hope everyone is watching. Water is pretty important. If you don’t like being cut back while thousands of new units are approved, this is certainly a race to look at.
