LANCASTER – The University of Antelope Valley Pioneers (2-9-1) fell to the Warriors of Lewis-Clark State College (4-4-1) in game one on Sunday, 13-6, and the two teams would finish game two in a 2-2 draw in non-conference NAIA baseball action at the Hangar.

Game one: UAV held a 6-5 lead after six innings, but before the start of the seventh, the umpires hurried all players off the field as rain and sleet battered the field.

After a delay that lasted around an hour, both teams warned up and began play, with the Warriors pouring in four runs in the seventh and ninth inning while holding UAV scoreless as they would go on to win, 13-6.

UAV junior right-handed starter Donovan Bertoncini (Madera, CA) went six innings and allowed five runs and seven hits, walking two and striking out six, and right-handed reliever Blake Hernandez (Visalia, CA) (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs, five earned, four hits, one walk, and struck out three in three innings.

After his six-game hitting streak was snapped yesterday, freshman second baseman Jacob Ogle (Riverside, CA) found his stroke once again, finishing the game 3-for-4, scoring three runs, knocking in one and walking once.
Senior designated hitter Mitch Cox (Spokane, WA) added one hit and two RBI, and junior first baseman Allen Pacheco (San Pedro, CA) and junior center fielder Cole Carder (Medford, OR) each finished with one hit and RBI.

Game two: With daylight quickly running out after an unexpected late start, the Pioneers and Warriors started the second game of the afternoon with the hopes of playing as much baseball as possible before running out of light.

LCSC got on the board first with a two-run second inning, and after UAV added one run in each the third and fourth innings, the game was called abruptly due to a lack of sunlight in the stadium, forcing a 2-2 draw.

UAV junior lefty Isiah Ramos (Monrovia, CA) started and allowed just five hits and two runs, none earned across five innings, allowing one walk while striking out five in a no decision.

Senior third baseman Nate Broaddus (Lemoore, CA) finished 2-for-3 with one RBI, five other Pioneers each added one hit, including junior second baseman Kyle Lathrop (Lancaster, CA), who finished 1-for-2, scored one run, walked once and stole a base.

Next series: Coached by Jacob Garsez, the Pioneers stay at home and open Cal Pac play next weekend, hosting Simpson University for a three-game set Feb. 22-23, beginning with a single game on Friday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. PST at the Hangar in Lancaster, Calif.
