Placerita Nature Center held its ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony on Wednesday morning to showcase renovations that were years in the making.

The project cost more than $1.4 million in improvements to the museum which now includes three large dioramas depicting Placerita Canyon’s primary ecosystems complete with life-like taxidermy animals, a wall-sized freshwater aquarium, a bird-watching area, informative displays on native flora and fauna and renovated bird and animal enclosures.

“Placerita Canyon Nature Center Museum tells a compelling story about the animals and plants that make L.A. County such a unique place to experience the beauty of the natural world,” said Department of Parks and Recreation Director Russ Guiney. “We look forward to welcoming visitors of all ages who can embrace these new opportunities for learning and fun.”

Additional improvements include a new roof and exterior restoration for Walker Cabin, a new portable water system at Walker Ranch Campground and a bridge for those with disabilities.

Funding for the project came through a $1 million grant from California State Parks through Proposition 84, $465,000 from the office of Michael D. Antonovich and Placerita Canyon Nature Center Association contributed nearly $30,000 for the completion of the master plan and design.

The museum also stresses the importance of conserving natural habitat and received the LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, Silver Certification from the  U.S. Green Building Council in 2010.

“I was here years ago with my daughters for a school trip and I just can’t believe the transformation, it’s beautiful in there,” said Lisa Moulton, District Director for U.S. Rep. Steve Knight, R-Antelope Valley.
