Greetings and welcome to a new year! As we begin a new calendar year, it is my pleasure to share with you some of the top programs and projects on our city’s plan for 2016.

We are currently starting year two of our strategic plan called Santa Clarita 2020. The plan encompasses a wide range of short and long-term projects and programs aimed at taking our city into the next decade and beyond. One of the key aspects of the plan is community engagement.

In Canyon Country, the city is currently in design for the 6.5 acres near the intersection of Soledad Canyon Road and Sierra Highway. That property will be home to a new and permanent community center. Some of the amenities planned for the facility and the property include a gymnasium, multi-purpose room, arts/crafts room, fitness room, kitchen, half-court basketball, community events garden, a multi-purpose field, a tot lot and more.

In Saugus, we are working on a site to build a new library center. While no location has been selected, your input as to where it ought to be and what it should include are important. By working in concert with the Saugus community, we are hoping to have a location decided this year.

In Valencia, the city plans to rehab Old Orchard Park. A newly created master plan for the park, driven by community input and ideas, will transform this “oldie but goodie.” Old Orchard Park renovations will include an improved ball field, a senior gaming area, a relaxation and fitness area, a new multi-use sports court, more parking, a shade covered outdoor patio with group barbecue and picnic tables.

In Newhall, the transformation of our Arts and Entertainment District continues. Right now, the city is in negotiations to possibly bring a Laemmle Theatre, a commercial and retail project that would include some residential, plus a parking structure to the empty lot at the corner of Lyons and Main Street.
