The Saugus boys basketball team showed Clovis North how tough the Foothill League can be.
Saugus beat the reigning Central Section Division II champions, 69-54, and handed Clovis North its second loss in a row to a Foothill League team. Valencia beat Clovis North, 55-45.
Saugus hit 10 3-pointers and led by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter.
Matt Coleman had 16 rebounds and 10 points. Jeremy Gatewood led Saugus in scoring with 14 points.
On the girls side, West Ranch won a pair of games over the weekend. The Wildcats beat Steele Canyon, 60-39, behind 19 points from Michele Arima on Saturday night. Hannah Green had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
West Ranch needed overtime to beat Horizon Christian, 63-59, on Friday night. Whitney Branham hit a 3-pointer to force overtime and had 19 points to lead West Ranch.
The Saugus girls beat Santa Monica, 49-42. Megan Dawe scored 18 points and Kim Smither had 10 points.
In college basketball, The Master’s College men beat Hope International, 59-58, in overtime. Devin Dyer gave The Master’s College a four-point lead with fast-break dunk with 32 seconds left in the overtime period.
Dyer and Anthony Cammon each scored 19 points to lead The Master’s College.
The Master’s College women lost to Hope International, 73-64. Lena Rivera and Kaylynn Martin each scored 12 points for The Master’s College.
The College of the Canyons men lost to Citrus College, 85-81.
The COC women also lost to Citrus, 57-52.
In the NFL playoffs, the Denver Broncos and Tim Tebow stunned the Pittsburgh Steelers, 29-23, in overtime to advance to the AFC semifinals. The Broncos will play the New England Patriots next week.
The Houston Texans won their first playoff game in franchise history, 31-10, over the Cincinnati Bengals.
In the NFC wild-card rounds, the New York Giants defense stepped up against the Atlanta Falcons, 24-2.
The New Orleans Saints routed the Detroit Lions, 45-28, behind three touchdowns and 466 passing yards from Drew Brees.
In hockey, the Kings are home for a game against the Washington Capitals tonight. The Kings have lost two of their last three games and are coming off a 1-0 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Listen to the game on AM 1220 KHTS. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
