College of the Canyons golfer Kristin Grimes won the Southern California Regional individual championship by two strokes at San Luis Rey Downs Resort.
She was the only golfer to shoot under par in the two-round event. She was 1-under 71 on the first day of the tournament and followed with a 7-over 79 on the second day. She was 6-over 150 for the two rounds.
Kate Cho led a trio of golfers from Irvine Valley College who followed Grimes in the Southern California Regional championship.
Grimes, the reigning women’s state golf champion, is the second player from COC to win the Southern California Regional title. Jenny Lee won the Southern California Regional in 2007.
In high school volleyball, the Valencia girls won a nail-biter in five games over Flintridge Sacred Heart in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division IA playoffs.
Delaney Knudsen led the Vikings with 15 kills. Valencia won the fifth game, 15-12, to take the match.
The Hart girls beat visiting Moorpark in four games in the first round of the Southern Section Division IA playoffs. Chase Tengberg led Hart with 12 kills off the bench.
West Ranch lost to Louisville in five games and was eliminated from the playoffs.
Saugus was swept by La Salle, the No. 2 seed in the playoffs, and eliminated as well.
In high school football, West Ranch coach Sean O’Brien has decided to step down. He was the West Ranch football coach for four years and was 18-23 in that time.
His team is coming off a 2-8 season and won only one Foothill League game. He guided the Wildcats to their only playoff appearance in 2010.
In college volleyball, The Master’s College women lost to Concordia in five games in a match-up of top 10 teams in the NAIA.
Sam Dougherty had a team-high 21 kills for The Master’s College. Concordia, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, improved to 28-0. The Lady Mustangs, No. 7 in the NAIA, dropped to 25-4.
