Valencia High graduate Max Homa won the NCAA individual golf championship by shooting a 4-under 66 in the final round in Milton, Ga.
Homa, a senior at UC Berkeley, was two shots off the lead entering the final round of the NCAA golf championship. He birdied three of the first five holes to take the lead.
Cal earned the top seed in the team match play portion of the tournament behind Homa’s strong effort.
He won the tournament by three strokes over Jon Rahm from Arizona State on the Capital City Club’s Crabapple Course.
In college baseball, Sam Robison from The Master’s College was selected to the NAIA baseball World Series All-Tournament team. Robison is the second baseman for the Mustangs.
In high school track and field, the CIF state finals start today in Clovis with five athletes from the Foothill League entered in the meet.
Saugus is sending three runners to the state finals.
Sabrina Janes won the 800 meters in the Masters Meet at Cerritos College and is the Southern Section’s top qualifier in the state finals.
Samantha Ortega will run in the 3,200. She finished fifth in the Masters Meet.
Rodrigo Ornelas will compete in the boys 3,200 race.
Valencia’s Olivia Pear joins Janes in the girls 800 at the state finals.
Canyon’s Jeremy Kimmer will compete in the high jump.
The prelims begin today.
In baseball, the Dodgers lost to the Angels, 3-2, and split the Freeway Series. Each team won two games.
Chris Nelson broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI single in the sixth inning.
Dodgers starter Ted Lilly gave up all three runs on five hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings.
Angels starter Jason Vargas completed an undefeated month of May with a 5-0 record. He went seven innings and struck out six.
There was more bad news for the Dodgers. All-star outfielder Matt Kemp was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a hamstring strain. He took himself out of Wednesday night’s game against the Angels.
The Dodgers are in Colorado tonight to start a weekend series against the Rockies.
Clayton Kershaw starts for the Dodgers against Jon Garland for the Rockies.
