Senator Sharon Runner (R-Antelope Valley) announced she will not seek re-election to the California State Senate. Her current term ends in December 2016.
Runner underwent a successful double lung transplant in 2012 and recently celebrated her fourth anniversary with new lungs. Unfortunately, medical challenges during the cold and flu season have become more difficult to address. While she is now healthy, her doctors have advised that the stress of a campaign and four more years in the Legislature would be detrimental to her health.
“This is a difficult decision that was made after a great deal of prayer, thought, and discussions with my family and doctors,” said Runner. “I will continue to work hard and advocate for my constituents for the remainder of my term, but have chosen not to seek re-election. My doctors have stressed the need to slow down, and I will heed their advice.”
Runner was elected to the Senate in March 2015 in a special election to replace then-Senator Steve Knight after he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Known for her ability to bring people together, she was the only candidate whose name appeared on the ballot. She previously represented the 21st Senate District from 2011 to 2012.
“The opportunity to once again represent the 21st District in the State Senate was an unexpected blessing and something I will always be thankful for,” said Runner. “In the coming years, I have every intention of continuing to serve my wonderful community, just not as a member of the Legislature.”

We thank Sharon Runner for her faithful service.
We expressed years ago that Sharon Runner has been a commendable community servant and we disliked the idea that after two lung replacements that she even be encouraged by her family members to continue pursuing a political career knowing the rigors, roller coaster rides, and constant unknowns. We believed she needed time to fully heal before engaging in more chaos which comes with politics. Even in politics the spirit needs time to heal. . . we have never met her and haven’t always agreed with her politics but believe it is only fitting she take this time to recapture the rightful peace she deserves . . . Respectfully, Minerva and Todd (SCV Communicators)
