[KHTS] – Coroner’s officials have identified the woman killed in a mid-day crash Sunday, when a car plummeted about 100 feet over the side of Interstate 5 north of Castaic.
Rosa Silva Torres, 57, of Salinas, was killed and four others were hospitalized when the car went off the southbound side of the road, near the Vista Del Lago exit, around 2:24 p.m.
The 2010 Chevy Malibu was traveling at an unknown rate of speed when it drifted onto the right shoulder of the road, collided with the curb, went airborne and then descended an embankment, rolling several times.
The car was driven by an unidentified 22-year-old man from Salinas. Both the driver and the Torres were not wearing safety equipment before the crash. The driver sustained major injuries.
Three children who were passengers wore safety belts and sustained moderate injuries. They were 4, 8 and 15 years old, and transported to Children’s Hospital for treatment.
The car caught fire shortly after it crashed, which spread to the surrounding brush.
The right-most lane was shut down for several hours as a result of the crash.
Alcohol and drugs are not suspected as factors in the crash.
No other information about the extent of the survivors’ injuries is known at this time.
