Stealing from the living is bad enough, but stealing from the dead is unspeakably awful.
That’s just what’s happening at Eternal Valley, where more than 300 brass and other metal vases have been reported stolen over the last month.
Sheriff’s patrol units have been increased near the memorial park and park security is on a constant vigil for thieves who dig up the flower holders placed near headstones and try to cash them in as scrap metal. According to sheriff’s officials, there was a rash of thefts like this in 2011, for which someone was arrested. Vases stolen in those incidents were mostly brass, which brought in a good price from recyclers.
Because this type of crime is happening all across the country, the funeral industry has responded by creating lookalike vessels that appear to be brass, but are made of less expensive materials, decreasing their value to potential thieves.
Whoever is behind this most recent rash of thefts apparently doesn’t know the difference. Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Dubin told KHTS that a variety of vases were taken, some newer and less valuable, some older and most costly.
“The thefts happened between the 4th of July and the 14th, when someone noticed there were several of them missing,” Dubin said. “They were all different shapes, colors and metals.”
Detectives have some leads on the case, but any additional information would be appreciated.
“This is a priority for our detective bureau and the Newhall units,” Dubin continued. “They are taking it very seriously and trying to be more visible around the cemetery.”
