A Santa Clarita man was sentenced Friday to 45 days in jail for petty theft after requesting a trial and losing the case.
Joseph Munoz, 19, of Canyon Country, was accused of entering the Walmart on Carl Boyer Drive in the Centre Pointe area with the intent to steal.
“He was found guilty on two counts – petty theft and second degree commercial burglary,” said Ricardo Santiago, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. “Both (charges) are misdemeanors, and in both, the victim is Walmart.”
He was immediately remanded into custody after the verdict and was released Monday from the municipal court’s lockup after serving three days in the court’s jail.
Munoz was cited and released shortly after the theft, according to Sheriff’s Department officials, who caught Munoz with about $100 worth of candy, and $133 worth of men’s socks and underwear.
He was also ordered to complete 10 days of Caltrans labor, a $150 penalty and to pay a public defender fee of $1,250.
He was also given three years of summary probation, during which he is ordered to stay away from Walmart.
The case was investigated by the COBRA unit of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, which handles most juvenile- and gang-related crime at the station.
The deputy district attorney in charge of the case’s prosecution declined to comment on the terms offered to the teen before trial.
The maximum statutory penalty for petty theft is a fine not exceeding $1,000, or by imprisonment in the county jail not exceeding six months, or both.

served 3 days of a 45 day sentence. when are we going to quit using the ‘time out’ process on the kids of today? it doesn’t work when they are toddlers and it doesn’t work when they’re adults. give them the max sentence and make them serve every minute. good time is for those not breaking the law not those serving time.
Like the lady that keeps going back to airports, he’ll be back…..
Marco Sanchez looks its Joseph
The guy stole some candy. Lighten up.
No you can blame Jerry Brown for this. Jail is full because of him and since it was a non violent crime. This is why he should be voted out.
Actually 1 of the many reasons why he should be voted out.
For them to say lighten up wow!!!! A thief is a thief and if he now thinks this is all he is going to get then he will do worse and worse.
Seriously, Paul? Yes he stole candy. He’s an adult who should know better. He broke the law and needs to be punished appropriately.
If people like that are not shown that there aren’t consequences they will repeat such actions.
