1902 - Hi Jolly (Hadji Ali), Gen. E.F. Beale's Syrian camel driver, dies at Quartzsite, Ariz. [story]

A Santa Clarita man pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter in the fatal crash that killed a 20-year-old Valencia resident on Valentine’s Day 2014.

Alexus Corral, 28, pleaded guilty to one count of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, said Jeffrey Illions, deputy district attorney for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office who prosecuted the case.

“There was a previous conviction for DUI that was alleged,” he said.

Corral was formally sentenced to 10 years in state prison Friday, after he filed his plea.

A restitution hearing is scheduled for March 27.

The collision took place on Copperhill Drive approximately 3:55 p.m. on Feb. 14, 2014, involving Dylan Tyler Zimmerman, who was driving a black Honda Civic, and Corral, who had his daughter in the car with him at the time of the crash in a white Ford Fusion.

Preliminary information indicates the Ford traveling eastbound Copperhill Drive collided with the Civic, which was exiting Copperstone Drive, according to a statement from Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials.

Zimmerman was treated at the scene by personnel from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, and he later died at a local area hospital.

Fire officials administered oxygen to the driver of the Civic, and then when they got him out, administered CPR to him, according to a witness on scene.

I met Dylan’s mother a few weeks ago, while she was placing fresh flowers at the crash site. I can only hope she feels some sense of closure with this sentence.

  2. Nina Garwood says:

Prior conviction and ONLY 10 years ?!? What a travesty! Not to mention he had his daughter in the car! Everything about this is WRONG! I think about this family’s loss every day I drive by and see the shrine where the accident occurred. May God bless the Zimmerman family . I just wish justice would be served much more often …10 years is a slap on the wrist.

  3. That was fast, I don’t think colt Doherty has been sentenced for the accident that killed Dakota and it’s been a few years. I’m guessing it’s because this guy plead guilty?

  4. Sherry Sims says:

I agree. Ten years is not enough!

  5. if I was a judge, I would send him to chinese and do very hard labor. He would think twice about doing that again. and the worse is he had his daughter in the car with him.

  6. BTW, Colt Doherty was sentenced. Serving time now.

  7. Casey Gordon says:

Stay strong Zimmerman family. I didn’t know your son, but I’m reminded daily by the shrine and the pain you all must deal with daily. My heart breaks for you all My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

  8. I live right off of Bouquet Canyon Road at Seco and every Friday and Saturday nights when the bars close I hear the sirens popping off. Drunk drivers.

  9. This is extremely sad, how can this father have his daughter in the car while intoxicated. How selfish of risking other lives instead of waiting to sober up. I hope this message can impact others in SCV to not drink and drive. Dylan went to my High School and was friends with people I knew and I know how much it has impacted them. My prayers go out to the Zimmerman family.

  10. Sad that things like this happen

  11. Jerry Ford says:

Should have called Sober Drivers of Santa Clarita!!!

  12. Jim Lupold says:

10 years. He may serve 3.
From what I read, it appears he had a prior DUI conviction. Our justice system failing us again.

  14. My heart breaks for the Zimmerman family! Hugs and continued prayers for them!

  15. Please if you must drink…make arrangements to get home…before. ..you have a cocktail.. otherwise…have fruit juice or a soda…welcome to adulthood. !

  16. Jeanne says:

The story does not say it was alcohol or drugs.
Intoxicated does not have to be alcohol.

  17. Josh says:

The reason the sentence wasn’t more severe was that he was not the party most at fault for the collision. It is sad, however it is difficult to prosecute a felony DUI / “watson” murder when the intoxicated party is least at fault….regardless of speed it is incumbent upon the driver making the turning movement to safely clear all lanes of traffic….. still a tragedy, but I hope this helps clear up the reason for the plea deal….

CA Vehicle Code 22107. “No person shall turn a vehicle from a direct course or move right or left upon a roadway until such movement can be made with reasonable safety”

    • Stacy says:

Josh, you are incorrect. He was 100% at fault. Gross Vehicular Manslaughter while intoxicated (penal code 191.5(a)) has a maximum sentence of 10 years. He got the maximum time that was allowed.
