[KHTS] – Two teenagers, one from the Santa Clarita Valley, were involved in a traffic collision on Friday in Pacoima.
Justin Jerome Garcia, 18, was killed in a single-car crash in his 1984 Toyota Celica at 9:04 a.m Friday., according to California Highway Patrol officials.
The condition of his passenger, a 17-year-old girl from Rosemead, is unknown.
“The Toyota was traveling northbound I-5 at a high rate of speed when it abruptly exited the freeway at Van Nuys Boulevard,” according to a CHP report. “The Toyota failed to negotiate the curve of the off ramp and collided into the concrete sound wall.”
CHP officers are still investigating the cause of the crash.
Both Garcia and the passenger were taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, according to California Highway Patrol officials.
“I’m just trying to stay strong,” said Janelle Garcia, sister of Justin Garcia. “I can’t really read too much (about the incident). I still can’t believe he’s gone.”
Garcia was pronounced dead at 7:26 p.m., said Lt. Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
Garcia went to Saugus High School until his sophomore year when he attended the Opportunities For Learning Public Charter School and Reseda High School.
A memorial is being planning for July 11 around 4 p.m. at Eternal Valley Memorial Park & Mortuary, said Janelle Garcia. The memorial is still being planned and an official date will be released when the date is set.
