Fiber enthusiasts of all levels are invited to participate in the following free events:
Artist Reception – On Wednesday, Oct. 3, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., the exhibit will be celebrated with light appetizers, live music and a chance for the public to meet the talented artists behind the pieces featured in the exhibit.
Demonstration Day – On Saturday, Nov. 10, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the Southern California Handweavers’ Guild will be setting up their looms and presenting demonstrations of various weaving techniques. Stop by to try your hand at weaving, or visit their pop-up boutique to purchase a unique handwoven piece.
For centuries, the technique of weaving has been practiced for clothing, utilitarian and decorative purposes. “The wall hangings in this exhibit, woven entirely by members of the Southern California Handweavers’ Guild, are our modern take on this ancient skill,” says Nicki Bair and Karen Leckart, jurors of the exhibit. “Weavers are unique in that what brings them together is the tactile sensation derived from the fibers they select and the structures they create on their looms. Some weavers used a classic, plain weave structure and made it shine with color and texture. Others use simple thread and a complex structure for their inspiration to come alive. Each piece is a unique combination of fiber, structure and inspiration.”
The Southern California Handweavers’ Guild was founded in 1946 to advance the knowledge and practice of hand weaving and textile-related crafts. The guild welcomes fiber enthusiasts of any level. To learn more about the Southern California Handweavers’ Guild, please visit schg.org.
The exhibit will be on display until Jan. 18, 2019.
