Sheriff officials are investigating the cause of a crash that injured two cyclists Saturday morning in Lancaster.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Brian Dunn said Guizla Morales, 42, of Valencia, was driving a Honda Odyssey westbound on Avenue L at about 8 a.m. when she collided in the middle of an intersection with Nikki Fuzell, 43, of Palmdale, who was traveling south on 4th Street East in a PT cruiser.

The force of the collision propelled Morales’ minivan into two eastbound cyclists who were waiting to turn north onto 4th Street East.

The husband-and-wife cyclists were identified as Nathan Rippee, 32, and Deborah Rippee, 33, of Lancaster.

Nathan Rippee sustained a head wound and remains hospitalized in critical condition. Deborah Rippee suffered a broken shoulder and has been released from the hospital.

Both drivers were checked out at Antelope Valley Hospital and released.

Dunn said no arrests have been made, and his investigation is ongoing to determine which driver was at fault. The two vehicles hit each other’s front end in the 90-degree-angle collision.

“There were no eyewitnesses,” he said, adding that the cyclists didn’t see the crash coming.

“Both (drivers) say they had the green light, and we don’t have a way right now to say which one is (correct),” he said.

Dunn said the Rippees “did the right thing” when they slowed and stopped for the traffic light that turned yellow as they approached the intersection.

They were on a ride organized by a Lancaster bike shop. The rest of the group of 20 had completed their left-hand turn before the light turned yellow, Dunn said.

“They were the stragglers,” he said.
