After one round of the California State Intercollegiate in Ventura, the Mustangs men’s golf team was in the lead at 1-under.
Then came a round that head coach Jacob Hicks described as “sloppy” dampened what had been an excellent start to the season.
Team standings were not available as of 10 p.m. Monday night, but Master’s golf had dropped to 12-over collectively for the tournament.
Jack Dudeck, a sophomore, shot the second-best score of anyone in the tournament in Monday’s first round, a 2-under 70 (a number shared by two other golfers).
But the highlight of the day came in the form of sophomore Eric Martin, whom Hicks said has improved immensely on his ball striking.
Martin was on point Monday, shooting a team-low, even-par 144 through two rounds. His 71 in the morning was the first under-par round of golf of his collegiate career.
“He showed such great rhythm throughout the day,” Hicks said. “He took advantage of the par 5s.
The Mustangs will be back in action Tuesday. Here are the individual scores through two rounds.
Eric Martin: 71, 73 … Even 144
Luke Brueckner: 73, 74 … 3-over 147
Karsten Briley: 73, 75 … 4-over 148
Jack Dudeck: 70, 79 … 5-over 149
Jacob Lewis: 77, 79 … 12-over 156
