Amanda Beech, dean of the CalArts School of Critical Studies, had a summer full of adventures in art and academia.
Beech was in Singapore for the opening of “Propositions for a Stage: 24 Frames of a Beautiful Heaven,” a group exhibition at LaSalle College of the Arts that opened on July 28. Beech’s works on paper, part of her “Cause and Effect” series, are included in the show.
According to the exhibition notes, Beech’s work “plays with forms of processing and repetition through the layering and replication of text, materials and processes to address the manner in which realism (and so-called ‘real time’) is bound up in the rhetorical devices and narratives associated with popular culture and philosophy alike.”

Propositions for a “Stage: 24 Frames of a Beautiful Heaven” remains on view through October 22. The curator of the show, Bridget Crone, is teaching at CalArts this semester as a visiting faculty member in the School of Critical Studies.
Another summer highlight from Beech and the School of Critical Studies is an upcoming publication of work from Beech’s and James Wiltgen‘s research group, Cold War Cold World.
“Over the past two years we have held multiple events and talks, and now we are about to publish our first anthology with the publisher Urbanomic,” Beech wrote in an email. “The book also features the writing of faculty Christine Wertheim and Brian Evenson as well as me and James and also includes new work from our visiting fellow last year Reza Negarastani.
The CalArts’ research group has also been invited to present a panel on Art and Reason at the next College Art Association art conference, which will be held in Los Angeles in February 2018.
