Seasonal school employees who spent their summer standing in unemployment lines pushed the county and state’s jobless rate higher in July, according to data from the California Employment Development Department.
Los Angeles County’s July unemployment rate notched up to 12.4 percent in July from 12 percent in June. The increase was driven primarily by a loss of 24,200 jobs in local government education services — a normal seasonal reduction during the summer break, according to an EDD statement.
Total civilian employment for Los Angeles County fell by 36,000 jobs. Of that figure, 30,600 were nonfarm positions.
Joblessness in the city of Santa Clarita is historically lower than the rest of the county, state and nation. But the rate of increase in joblessness in Santa Clarita exceeded that of the larger jurisdictions in July, rising 0.6 percent over the month to 8.2 percent.
Statewide unemployment rose to 12 percent in July from 11.8 percent in June, a slight improvement from 12.4 percent a year earlier.
The nation’s jobless rate fell to 9.1 percent in July from 9.2 percent in June. It stood at 9.5 percent in July 2010.
Posting the highest gains during July in Los Angeles County were retail trade (up 2,700 jobs), information services (2,000), financial services (500), leisure and hospitality (400), manufacturing (400) and mining and logging (100).
