Jason Logan tallied 12 points and yanked down a game-high 12 rebounds to lead The Master’s College past visiting Simpson 68-46 Saturday afternoon in the season opener for the Mustangs.

Logan (Spartanburg, SC), who wowed the Redhawks (1-2) and Bross Gym fans alike with slashing drives and jaw-dropping blocks, was one of four Mustangs to finish in double figures, including a game-best 16 points from sophomore Chris Patureau (Houston, TX).

However, it was the senior duo of Leif Karlberg (Anchorage, AK) and Devin Dyer (Temecula, CA) that got the Mustangs going in the wire-to wire win. Karlberg buried the first of his two three-pointers 57 seconds into play and Dyer added a pair of layups as the Mustangs bolted to a 7-0 lead.

The Redhawks responded with two hoops to slice the deficit to three points but the Mustangs answered with a 12-2 skein to go up 19-6 with 11:13 left in the first half. Sophomore transfer Austin Loeb, making his first start in a Mustang uniform, ignited the run with a layup and sophomore transfer Monice Garrett finished it with two charity tosses for the 13-point advantage.

A little less than two minutes later, Logan went to work, triggering an 11-2 burst with a layup and then finishing things off on a three-point play to hand the Mustangs a half-high 20-point lead (30-10) with 6:12 left in the stanza.

Down the stretch, the Mustangs kept the foot on the pedal as Loeb and Patureau combined for the team’s final eight points in the half as the Mustangs went to the break up 38-19.

The Mustangs, who shot 43 percent from the field in the first half were led by Loeb’s fine, all-around effort of nine points and seven rebounds.

Intending on running the Redhawks out of Bross Gym, the Mustangs opened the second half with a 4-1 spurt to build a game-high tying lead of 22 points (42-20). For some reason, though, that woke up the Redhawks who reeled off 10 straight points in a 2:40 window to narrow the deficit to 42-30 with 13:39 left to play.

But, Logan put an end to the run with a free throw and when Patureau added three straight baskets and a free throw, the Mustangs had restored order at 50-33. The Redhawks never got closer than 16 points the rest of the way and the Mustangs cruised the rest of the way, equaling their largest lead of the evening on a Dyer three-point play with 24 seconds remaining.

Patureau manufactured his game-high total on 7-10 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds. Meanwhile, Logan was 4-10 from the field en route to his dozen points. Dyer chipped in with 13 points and Loeb finished with 10.
