Receiving all 23 first-place votes and 653 points, Texas at Brownsville remains the No. 1 team in the fifth edition of the Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Tuesday. This is the seventh-consecutive week the Scorpions have been ranked No. 1.
Texas at Brownsville dominated Red River Athletic Conference play sweeping its three matches last week. The Scorpions defeated Jarvis Christian (Texas) 3-0 (25-5, 25-7, 25-19) and Wiley (Texas) 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-19) on Sept. 28. A day later Texas at Brownsville defeated Texas College 3-0 (25-10, 25-5, 25-8). The wins increase the Scorpions winning streak to 24 matches.
Nos. 2-4 remained the same as Concordia (Calif.) earned 632 points for the second position, followed by No. 3 Columbia (Mo.), which garnered 609 points. Biola (Calif.) holds at No. 4 receiving 592 while Lee (Tenn.) moves up one spot to round out the top 5 with 567 points.
The biggest mover this week was The Master’s (Calif.) as it jumped five spots to No. 8. This is the Mustangs first top 10 ranking, dating back to 2000. The Mustangs won all three of its matches last week with over then-No. 5 Westmont (Calif.) 3-1 (19-25, 26-24, 25-15, 25-16), Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) 3-0 (25-17, 25-8, 25-19) and Arizona Christian 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-16).
After spending the previous two weeks at No. 5, Westmont falls to No. 10 after dropping its two matches this week.
Despite 15-of-25 teams shuffling positions, no new teams joined the Top 25.
Sixteen conferences/independents/unaffiliated groups are represented throughout the Top 25, led by the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) with four ranked teams. Representing the GSAC are Concordia, Biola, The Master’s College and Westmont.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and Independents. The fourth regular-season poll will be announced Oct. 9.
