Game Recap By Don Gilmore, TMU Assistant Sports Editor
Jim Rickard had a lot to say following TMU’s first loss of the 2018 campaign.
“We did enough to win the game between the 18’s,” said TMU’s head coach. “But that’s not what the scoreboard cares about.”
What the scoreboard said after 90 minutes Saturday was 0-0.
Twenty-three seconds into overtime it read 1-0 as Embry-Riddle’s Grant Rowe scored a golden goal in front of his home crowd to drop the Mustangs to 5-1 on the year.
Rickard called it “a classic soccer loss when you don’t put balls in the net early.”
“Embry gained more belief each time we missed our chances,” Rickard said. “And early in OT they had a fantastic strike from distance to end the game.”
Those chances Rickard spoke of came in the form of 12 shots on goal, four each from Benji Tembo (pictured above in an earlier-season game against Jessup) and Leo Anjos. Not one of them got past Eagle goalie Alistair Stark, who was simply outstanding in making nine saves.
At the other end, TMU freshman keeper Price Anderson picked up two saves while suffering his first collegiate loss.
So, the Mustangs returned home after a short weekend in Prescott, Ariz., to prepare for five home matches in their next six.
The first of those kicks off Thursday when the squad welcomes the University of Antelope Valley to Reese Field for a 4 p.m. start.
