The Master’s University women’s swim team, fresh off an impressive inaugural season, was honored by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association as a Scholar All-America team this week.
The Mustangs earned a cumulative GPA for the spring 2019 semester of 3.35.
“Coach Byron Davis, in just one short year, has built a program that is fulfilling the university’s goals when starting swimming,” said CSCAA Executive Director Greg Earhart.
The Mustangs sent four relays and two individuals – Caroline Barnett and Journey Werner – (pictured above) to NAIA nationals in March, with Barnett advancing to the finals in the 50-yard freestyle.
Davis was thrilled to that hear his team, which consisted of five freshmen and one junior, had received an honor outside the pool such as the Scholar All-America designation.
“I’m so proud of how the ladies stepped up this year in both the pool and the classroom,” he said. “Being first-year student-athletes for most of them, it shows their dedication and focus.”
The Mustangs, who primarily train at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center, compete in the Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference, which features Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount, among others.
Master’s has published a more robust schedule for 2019-2020 than last season.
The Mustangs open the year on Oct. 4 at the Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference Relay Invite in La Mirada, California.
