RIVERSIDE – After taking a week-long break from play, the University of Antelope Valley Pioneers women’s basketball team (8-2; 1-0 Cal Pac) returned to the court on Saturday evening to open conference play against La Sierra University (3-9; 0-1 Cal Pac), routing the Golden Eagles, 106-46, in intercollegiate California Pacific Conference women’s basketball action inside Alumni Pavilion Gymnasium in Riverside.
The contest was all-UAV from the jump, with the Pioneers outscoring La Sierra by double digits in each period, holding the Golden Eagles offense to just nine points in both the first and third periods en route to the 106-46 conference-opening win.
Junior guard Asia Young (Kansas City, MO) led all scorers in the contest with 21 points while adding three rebounds, two assists and one steal, and senior guard Samantha Earl (Clovis, CA) scored 15 points and also added a game-high five assists, four rebounds, two blocks and one steal.
Senior guard Ilianna Blanc (Los Angeles, CA) added 12 points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal, and senior guards Daizah Pounds (Richmond, CA) and Alyssa Gonzales (Bakersfield, CA) each dropped 11 points.
UAV hit 39-of-82 field goals (.476), 19-of-42 three-pointers (.452), 9-of-12 free throws (.750), and outrebounded the Golden Eagles, 51-31. UAV committed 25 turnovers and stole the ball 21 times. La Sierra made 13-of-54 shots (.241), 2-of-13 three-pointers (.154) and 18-of-28 free throws (.643) and committed 33 turnovers and stole the ball from UAV 11 times.
