LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The second-ranked UCLA women’s water polo team swept the competition at the Bruin Invitational on Sunday. The Bruins downed Redlands, 23-2, before dispatching Pomona-Pitzer, 25-3, at Spieker Aquatics Center. With the wins, UCLA improves to 20-2 on the season.
In the morning matchup with Redlands, UCLA presented a well-balanced attack. Nine different Bruins found the back of the net and 15 of UCLA’s goals were assisted. Lizette Rozeboom and Devin Grab led in scoring with five goals apiece. Sarah Sheldon notched two goals and dished out three assists, while a trio of Bruins each tallied two assists—Kelsey Blacker, Kelsey O’Brien, and Rachel Whitelegge. UCLA was five for nine on power plays, led by Grab with two man-up goals.
Defensively, the Bruins tallied 17 steals, led by Whitelegge and O’Brien with three apiece. In the cage, rookie keeper Carlee Kapana put up three stops.
UCLA carried this momentum into its afternoon tilt with Pomona-Pitzer. Putting away 15 goals in the first half alone, the Bruins were a well-oiled machine. Alexa Tielmann registered a hat trick in the first half, and four Bruins—Rozeboom, Ashley Zwirner, Elissia Schilling, and India Forster—netted two apiece. Showcasing its team-style attack, UCLA assisted on 11 of its first-half goals.
In the second half, the Bruins outscored the Sagehens, 10-3. Louise Hazell, Nicole Reynolds, and O’Brien each notched two goals. Hazell’s first was a fast-break point off an assist from veteran keeper Alex Musselman.
Overall, 12 Bruins put points on the board and UCLA tallied 19 assists on 25 goals. Tielmann led in scoring with four, while Pratt and Barr registered four assists apiece. Between the pipes, Musselman stopped eight shots in the first three quarters and Kapana tallied two saves in the final eight minutes. Dominating defensively, the Bruins recorded 16 steals.
Wrapping weekend action with a 3-0 record, UCLA resumes conference play next Saturday when it faces top-ranked Southern California. The crosstown showdown takes place at USC at 1 pm PDT.
