SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The College of the Canyons women’s soccer team entered the national rankings this week as the No. 9 team in the country, according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). It marks the first time that the Cougars are making an appearance in the rankings under head coach Justin Lundin.
“It is nice to be ranked, but we really are only a quarter of the way into our season,” Lundin said. “I think it is a testament to how hard this group has worked. We have a lot of sophomores that were members of the conference championship team last season. They didn’t let that go to their head and they continued to work hard all summer and off-season. I think they are very deserving of the ranking and now we just have to finish strong stay focused on the goal to win another Western Conference Championship.”
The Cougars returned 13 players from last year’s squad, which earned the program’s fifth Western State Conference Championship and first since the 2004 season.
“The ranking means a lot,” team captain and sophomore Sydney Tobin said. “It still is a little unreal. Our team put in a lot of hard work and we were very excited about this season. To be named in the national rankings is amazing.”
Though the rankings have no bearing on playoff implications, the poll does deem a national champion at the end of the soccer season.
COC is currently 6-0-1 on the season and begins its conference season at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, as they host Santa Monica College.
Founded in 1941 and based in Kansas City, Kansas, the NSCAA has grown into the world’s largest soccer coaches’ organization, serving members at every level of the game. The NSCAA releases its polls weekly on Tuesday afternoons at www.nscaa.com/rankings.
