Newhall Zone 6 Public Safety and Crime Prevention Info for the week 09/23/13 through 09/29/13.

There were two part 1 crimes reported in the Newhall Zone 6 area over the previous week. An attempted residential burglary, and an arrest for the burglary of a travel trailer.

Between 10:00pm Monday the 24th and 11:00am Tuesday the 25th an unknown person tried to pry the door open of an apartment in the 24300 block of Daylily Drive while the resident was not home. There have been similar incidents in recent months in the same general area. The residents of the apartments near Valle Del Oro and Dockweiler Drive should be especially diligent in reporting suspicious behavior. There are numerous people in the area in all walks of life, but just pay attention to breaking noises, dogs barking, flashlights, and people you don’t recognize acting suspicious. Neighborhood watch doesn’t need to be an organized group with meetings, it can be just be a person concerned about the neighborhood you live in.

Report suspicious behavior to the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s station 24 hours a day at, (661)255-1121. If it’s an emergency, or if you witness a crime occurring, call 911.

On Thursday the 26th, at 8:15am, a business owner in the 22400 block of 12th Street saw a person exiting his travel trailer. The 20 year old male was arrested for burglary and vandalism for breaking in to the trailer and intentionally causing damage inside it. When you see a crime occurring, call 911, stay on the phone, and be a good witness. Be very careful taking independent action which could place your safety or your family’s safety in peril. Suspects of any type of crime can be unpredictable.

I am still getting information regarding phone scams in Los Angeles County. I sent out some information two weeks ago I feel is important, so I am resending it today. Beware of telephone scams. I am aware of 3 separate types of phone scams that are appearing in LA County. One scam is someone impersonating a DEA agent. The fake DEA Agent has been calling residents who have purchased prescription medication through the mail. The scammer convinces the person they have committed a felony and agents are going to arrest them. The scammer tells the person they can avoid arrest simply by paying a fine, which normally is $3,100 in cash. A second scam is where someone calls a resident who has solicited internet information on personal loans. The scammer negotiates a loan, and then convinces the person they will have to pay a down payment on loan payments. The scam is usually concluded with the victim purchasing cash cards from a retail store and providing the card number to the scammer. A third scam which was told to me this week from a Newhall resident, is someone posing as a police officer and soliciting cash donations for a Police Expo. Don’t be a scam victim. Take the time to research businesses and solicitations. There are numerous legitimate businesses who solicit over the phone, but there are numerous phony ones too. Often times just researching the phone number the solicitors use by placing it into an internet browser will quickly uncover a scam.

A new scam to be aware of is phony insurance solicitors claiming to be with the government. The callers will claim to be helping sign people up for the new government insurance plans under “Obama Care”. Be sure to research the legitimate government website at www.HealthCare.gov . If you need information about the plans, use the contacts provided by the government for the health agencies you would like information from.

A notable arrest I wanted to mention. Detectives from the COBRA team identified and arrested a second suspect involved in the stabbing that took place in Newhall on September 15th. The 27 year old female suspect was booked in Lancaster and is being held on bail in excess of one million dollars.
