With the baby boomer population growing older, the shortage of registered nurses is being felt not only locally but nationally.
According to the Department of Consumer Affairs Board of Registered Nursing website, there are currently 433,551 total registered nurses in California.
Providence Southern California hires about 120 nurses each month but hospitals in Los Angeles and Orange counties still need approximately 40,000 additional nurses, according to a press release from Providence Health & Services.
On September 1 the Providence Health Service Hospitals in Southern California started a recruitment campaign called 90 Nurses in 90 Days.
The campaign aims to offer “bonuses (of) up to $5,000 to employees who successfully refer nurses to Providence for specific specialities – emergency care, intensive care, cardiac catheterization and surgery.”
Bonuses are only offered for referrals of experienced nurses, according to the release.
The recruiting campaign will happen again this November.
