Santa Clarita’s putting on the green Thursday night as Senses on Main celebrates this month’s Third Thursday with a St. Patrick’s Day-themed street party on Main Street in Old Town Newhall.

Starting at 7 p.m., local Celtic rock quartet Ken O’Malley & The Twilight Lords will have dancers reelin’ in celebration of Irish heritage.

It’s an all-ages bash, but fear not – green beer, whisky and other libations will be on sale, and a fleet of food trucks will provide sustenance for the revelers at budget-friendly prices.

The 13th annual Summer Meltdown Autism Awareness Art & Music Festival, originally announced for Saturday and Sunday, April 30 and May 1 at Central Park, has reportedly been cut back to a single-day event.

The parent of a student in Canyon High School’s Yes I Can program, who knows I have covered Summer Meltdown in local media (since 2005), and who requested anonymity, sent me an email Wednesday saying city of Santa Clarita officials had withdrawn a previous OK for a two-day festival at Central Park.

Contacted for comment Wednesday afternoon, Bret Lieberman, Canyon High special ed instructor, Yes I Can program director and Summer Meltdown executive producer, confirmed the festival is now being scaled back to a single day.

“We met with the city on multiple occasions last year after the 12th annual Meltdown to debrief, and shared our plan then to expand to a two-day festival to help raise funds within our city,” Lieberman said. “Now, we’re working with them to see how we can expand it to a two-day event next year to provide our students, and the community the best experience possible.”

This year, Lieberman said, “We will be adding a third stage, so now we will have three stages to accommodate the bands already booked. We’re beyond excited to be able to welcome DJ Z-Trip, Katchafire, Chali 2na of Jurassic 5, Zion I, Through The Roots and many more artists coming from around the world in support of autism awareness and to celebrate social inclusion.”

Rick Gould, Santa Clarita’s director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services, confirmed the single-day news Wednesday afternoon.

“We’re very supportive of [Summer Meltdown] coming to Central Park for one day, but putting on that kind of event in Central Park for two days puts tremendous pressure on the neighborhood,” Gould said.

“We had other bookings in Central Park,” he said. “As you probably know, it’s a major sports venue for Santa Clarita. So in order to go to two days, we would’ve had to remove a bunch of other people who had been pre-booked.

“The first we heard they were going to go to two days was late February, two months before the event,” he said. “Because we already had other bookings, because of the impact on the park and the surrounding neighborhood, we didn’t feel we could support it. We can support one day so far.

“We did have a meeting with [festival organizers, parents and students], and we’ve agreed that we’ll support each other in the coming years. If they’re looking for opportunities for growth, we look forward to trying to figure it out with them,” Gould said.

“We’re very glad that going forward the Yes I Can program and the Summer Meltdown festival will have the city’s continued support, as the city has been a sponsor for the last 12 years,” Lieberman said. “In a true collaboration between the Yes I Can Program and Santa Clarita’s Arts & Events Department, the sky is the limit.”
