The College of the Canyons women’s soccer team finally had the opportunity to play a home match on Tuesday, with the Lady Cougars exciting the home crowd behind three goals and a shutout defensive performance to claim a 3-0 win over Los Angeles Valley College.
COC freshman defender Hailey Phipps got the evening started with a long goal off a free kick just two minutes into the match. The goal was the third of the season for Phipps, and helped set the tone for a team that has now won four of its last five contests.
Canyons (5-2) has now scored two or more goals in five games this year led by a strong attack that features freshman midfielder Angel Quintero, sophomore forward Amanda Balzer and freshman midfielder Sigany Brice.
On Tuesday, sophomore forward Jackie Mendez also got involved in the action with her first goal of the season which came in the 42nd minute off an assist from Quintero to give the Lady Cougars a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Six minutes into the second half Canyons was on the attack yet again with Quintero registering her team-leading third assist on a goal by Brice, her second of the season.
The Cougars finished the game with 19 shots, compared to just two from the Monarchs.
Canyons will now travel to face Long Beach City College at 4 p.m. on Friday.
