Cynthia Jacobo of the Santa Clarita Blue Heat has been named the United Soccer League’s female goalkeeper of the year.
Jacobo learned of the honor July 28 at the USL’s W-League awards banquet in Seattle.
An incoming junior at Cal State Northridge, Jacobo played every minute for the Blue Heat during the club’s 2011 season, helping lead her teammates to the eight-member Western Conference crown. She led the W-League in saves with 85 and tied for second in wins with 8, and in shutouts with 5.
It was only the second year of play for the Blue Heat, which organized in Santa Clarita in 2010. With experienced players from Europe, Mexico and U.S. collegiate teams, the club competes against teams from Canada, Colorado, Seattle and the Los Angeles area. Home games are played at various SCV high school and college campuses.
USL’s W-League is North America’s main women’s developmental soccer organization. One notch below the top-level Women’s Professional Soccer league, the W-League enables college althletes to play alongside established international players while maintaining their collegiate eligibility.
