Assemblywoman Christy Smith (D-Santa Clarita) will be the special guest speaker at the Second Annual “Wake up, Stand up” Sexual Harassment/Assault Prevention Seminar at College of the Canyons on Saturday, April 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The seminar for students was created and is run by students from all over the Santa Clarita Valley. Admission and parking will be free, and a free brunch will be served.

The seminar will feature a panel of professional women, in-depth workshops, diverse workshops and a community art gallery in order to create the most universal representation of education and advocacy.

Panelists slated to participate are Shana Williams (COC), Alexis Claiborn (ASU Graduate), Leah Parker (Child & Family Center), Alejandra Sandoval (Peace over Violence) and Caryn Sanders (Lawyer).

Seminar workshops will include “Tools You Can Use,” “Sexism in Media,” “Male POV, Consent, Healthy Relationships & Red Flags” and “Victim Blaming.”

Booths at the seminar will include the COC Health Center, the Child & Family Center, the UCLA Rape Center, Peace Over Violence, Strength United, PFLAG, Zonta, Damsel in Defense, and Peace and Happy.

Our Mission
The cyclical behavior of sexual harassment has created an inherent issue of flawed mutual respect. On April 20, our mission is to change this.

Before high school and college students graduate and transition into different career paths, we must centralize the education of sexual harassment through the universal knowledge of mental health, recovery, testimonials, self-defense, prevention, self-defense, victim vs. perpetrator, and communal respect.

Through an event geared toward the perspective of young adults, the effects of glorifying and allowing objectification of both men and women (overly prevalent in media and life) can and will be broken.

This event is less of a seminar and more of a “movement” as students are not going to be merely attending this event but enacting change through education and advocacy.

Wake Up to the problem, Stand Up to change the status quo.
