Detectives from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station arrested an eighth-grade student at Rio Norte Junior High School in Valencia on Wednesday who was suspected of making criminal threats, station officials reported Thursday.
Here’s more of the story from the station’s social media:
“School threats are no joke. We take all threats seriously, even ones that appear to be a prank.
“Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies were made aware on Wednesday, May 8, of a student that allegedly made threatening comments directed at several Rio Norte Junior High School students.
“An investigation led by COBRA detectives and school resource officers determined there was no threat to student safety.
“The student told detectives he ‘was just joking’ when the comments were made.
“The 8th grader was charged with making criminal threats and taken in custody to the SCV Sheriff’s Station where he was later released to his parents.
“The message to students is simple. We are never going to take this lightly.
“Making school threats in jest will still launch a complete criminal investigation on our part. Poor judgment by students can have a long-lasting effect as criminal records could affect future college admissions and prospective jobs.
“Think before you post to social media or send text messages. An action that takes a second, could pose consequences that will linger for years.”
