College of the Canyons diver Alexis Kearns placed 14th in the women’s 1-meter dive event during the first day of competition at the 2015 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Swim & Dive State Championships hosted by East Los Angeles College.
The freshman —who just began her diving career last semester — finished with a score of 140.75 in the six-round state championship competition.
At the event she competed against athletes from Orange Coast College, Riverside City College, Santa Rosa Junior College, American River College, Cypress College and Mt. SAC among others.
“As a first year diver Alexis worked really hard all season to get to this point. She definitely put in the practice time,” said COC diving coach Daniel McCann. “It’s really quite an accomplishment.”
Earlier this season Kearns was crowned the 2015 Western State Conference (WSC) champion in both the women’s 1-meter and 3-meter dive events.
The Quartz Hill High School product went on to place sixth in both events at last month’s CCCAA SoCal Championships to earn an automatic bid to the State Championships.
In addition, Kearns also competes on the COC swim team.
Kearns will return to action on Friday, May 1, as she looks to make a splash in the women’s 3-meter dive event.
She will be joined by her COC swimming teammate, Philip Wong. who will be competing in both the 100 yard and 200y butterfly events.
The CCCAA Swim & Dive State Championships are being held April 30 –May 2 at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park.
