[News Release] – College of the Canyons will present a thought-provoking lecture and accompanying book signing by prominent anti-racist writer and educator Tim Wise.

The presentation “Colorblind: The Rise of Post-Racial Politics and the Retreat from Racial Equality” will take place at 2:30 p.m. Monday, April 21, on the main stage of the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center (PAC).

In his lecture, Wise will discuss the pitfalls associated with the idea of “colorblindness,” while arguing in favor of deeper levels of color-consciousness in both public and private practice.

It’s Wise’s belief that society can only begin to move toward authentic social and economic equity through what he calls “illuminated individualism.” This is achieved by acknowledging the diverse identities that have shaped one’s perceptions, and the role that race continues to play in the maintenance of disparities between whites and people of color in the United States today.

“As our community becomes more diverse it is important to have open dialogue and challenge our own unconscious biases,” said Dr. Diane Fiero, Assistant Superintendent/Vice President, Human Resources at College of the Canyons. “We hope our students, employees and members of the community will join us for this worthwhile event.”

One of the most renowned anti-racist writers in the nation, Wise has authored six books and spoken to audiences about anti-racism issues in all 50 states and at more than 1,000 college and high school campuses.

Named one of the “25 Visionaries Who are Changing Your World,” by the magazine Utne Reader in 2010, Wise has also contributed chapters and/or essays to more than 25 additional books, and appears regularly on CNN and MSNBC to discuss race issues.

The lecture “Colorblind: The Rise of Post-Racial Politics and the Retreat from Racial Equality” will begin at 2:30 p.m. in the PAC.

The book-signing portion of the event will begin immediately following Wise’s presentation at 4:30 p.m. in the PAC lobby, and run until approximately 5:15 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided by the College of the Canyons Associated Student Government (ASG).

This event is free and open to the community. However, campus visitors are asked to purchase a $2 single-day parking permit from the parking permit kiosk located in parking lot #6.
