Monday, April 23 is the deadline to apply for street pole Hometown Heroes military banners to be displayed by the city of Santa Clarita on Memorial Day, saluting actively serving military members from the Santa Clarita Valley.
Final applications are now being taken at the city’s new Hometown Heroes webpage at santa-clarita.com/heroes, which features a search function allowing site visitors to view the SCV’s military heroes by branch and rank.
Each banner costs $417.50 plus tax, but thanks to generous sponsors, a special $100 discounted rate is currently available and other sponsorships are available for those in need. The price includes the installation and removal of the banners.
The price also includes a free digital banner to be deployed on the Hometown Heroes webpage.
Santa Clarita’s Hometown Heroes Military Banner Program honors actively serving military members from the SCV with streetlight pole banners displayed three times a year — Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Veterans Day.
Each street pole and digital banner features the military member’s photograph, name, rank and branch of the military they serve. The online banner will display the same information as the street pole banners do, with the added option of including a short description.
“Our goal is that every local hero be recognized,” said Santa Clarita Councilman Bob Kellar. “These digital banners offer a way to do that with zero cost to the recipient. We also have generous sponsors who have made street pole banners affordable on any budget.”
While Monday is the deadline for banners to be displayed on Memorial Day, the program is ongoing and orders will be accepted anytime for the upcoming Fourth of July and Veterans Day holidays.
When the Hometown Hero is no longer in the service, the family gets to keep the banner as a memento.
