The 45th annual Santa Clarita Valley Boys and Girls Club Benefit Auction raised $124,650 during the 47-item live auction portion of the event Saturday in Valencia.
The event, with this year’s theme of “Prom: The Sequel,” has historically been the most important fundraiser for the club, which operates locations in Newhall and Canyon Country.
The Heroes and High Hopes donation program – outright giving, with no auction item to take home – raised an additional $111,000. Included was a $20,000 match from the Henry Mayo Newhall Foundation and $10,000 donations from Wayne and Diane Crawford and Richard and Marian Sandnes.
The local Boys and Girls Club serves thousands of SCV youth with after-school and school vacation programs, said David Menchaca, CEO of the club. It was Menchaca’s first auction since taking the helm, but he has attended in the past.
“The auction is a fun event,” he said. “This is a great opportunity for people to network and to learn more about what we do at the club.”
Membership dues are $60 a year for the first child and $45 for each additional child in the family. However, costs for overhead, staff and programs increase the actual cost to more than $500 per child.

“This event has always been an important fundraiser for us,” said Wayne Crawford, president of the board. “We appreciate everyone who has come out to show their support of the club and all the great volunteers who make this event happen.”
Mike and Ann-Marie Bjorkman served as auction co-chairs for the second consecutive year.
“We are super excited about tonight,” Ann-Marie Bjorkman said. “We had so much fun last year that we wanted to do it again.”
She said she and her husband have signed on to serve as the 2017 auction chairs, as well.
Mike Bjorkman told the sold-out crowd of more than 300 guests several stories about how his years attending the club impacted his life.
He said he learned leadership and other life skills from his years attending the club after school.
“The club helped me learn how to be a friend, a gentleman and a leader,” Bjorkman said.

In addition to silent and live auctions, a “Prom Raffle” was held, offering guests the opportunity to choose any live auction item, with a few exceptions. However, the reserve of $15,000 in ticket sales was not met, so the raffle converted to a 50-50 split. Andy Dervin, the winner of the raffle donated his portion of the $6,400 pot back to the club.
In addition to funds raised by the live auction and raffle, totals for the silent auction, with nearly 150 items, sponsorships and the Prom King and Queen contest will be added to the event total of nearly $250,000. The net benefit donation to the club will be determined after expenses are tallied.
Prom King and Queen contestants included David Barkow, Daniel Sterkel, Jim Ventress, Robert Gardner, Mike Bjorkman, Missy Carter, Ann-Marie Bjorkman, Ronda Chobanian, Pegah Hunt, Tiffany Grummer and Amanda Benson. Guests were able to buy votes for $5 each.
Missy Carter was crowned Prom Queen, and Mike Bjorkman was crowned Prom King.
Among the top selling live auction items were: Adele Concert Tickets for 10 with Luxury Suite at Staples plus limo, $13,000; Head Table for the 2017 Auction, $10,000; Keith Urban Luxury Suite for 12 at Staples concert, $8,000; Dodgers Suite for 20, $6,750; Dodger Dugout Club Tickets, $5,500; and Princess Cruises $5,000 Premium Vacation Package, $5,250.
Other items included Six Flags Magic Mountain packages, jewelry, vacations, sports memorabilia and merchandise.
The summer vacation program at the SCV Boys and Girls Club will include the regular fun activities available at the club as well as a new academic program, said Menchaca.
“If parents are looking for things for their children to do this summer, the Boys and Girls Club is a great option,” he said. “We will feature the Summer Brain Gain program this year courtesy of the Staples Center Foundation and Old Navy. It will help kids keep their academic progress over the summer. We are very excited about this program.”
He said adults are invited to tour the two club locations for an up-close look at the great work the organization does.
