A supply drive was held Aug. 19 at the Santa Clarita Swap Meet to collect school supplies for students in need at the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley.
“This is the first time we have done anything like this and we are hoping to do it every year. There were hundreds of items collected during the swap meet and so many people in our community were willing to help the students at the Boys & Girls Club,” said Monica Lesh, lead coordinator for the event.
The Santa Clarita Swap Meet, located at the Saugus Speedway, gave people the opportunity to shop for new merchandise, collectibles and antiques, garage sale merchandise, produce, and other supplies at discount prices and bargain deals.
All proceeds go to the SCV Boys & Girls Club, which provides after-school programs instilling leadership skills, provides homework assistance, sports and other extracurricular activities. According to their website, the club strives to improve each child’s life by instilling self-esteem, courage, and positive values through all of their educational programs.
Several schools throughout the district took part in the project and the supplies collected was donated to the club where it will be distributed evenly among the students who need it most.
“We received spiral notebooks, paper, crayons, pens, pencils, erasers, folders, markers and everything you might need to help students have a successful school year, “ said Lesh.
