A unique Native American art exhibit titled “Neshkinukat: One Who Has Relatives” opens in the Old Town Newhall Library Community Room on August 25, and will be on display there through January 5.

“Neshkinukat” in the Native American language Luiseño means “One Who Has Relatives,” and in the Lakota language translates to “We Are All Related.”

The exhibit features traditional Native American art as well as abstract work from 16 artists showcasing the Native American belief that all creation is interconnected and interrelated.

The exhibit invites viewers to explore the Native American human interrelationship with the four “relatives” of the human peoples: the Stone People, the Plant People, the Animal People and the Spirit World.

A variety of mediums will be displayed including ceramics, gourd art, paintings, photographs and mixed media.

A public reception will be held on Wednesday, August 30, 2017, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Participants are invited to meet the artists and enjoy light appetizers and live music.

In conjunction with the exhibit, a special “Crafternoon” for school-age children will be held on Thursday, September 14, at 3:30 p.m. at the Old Town Newhall Library.

The Native American art-inspired craft will invite children to paint their vision of ancient symbols on a useful item to give as a gift or to keep for themselves.
